50 followers!!!!!!!

happy anime gif

HELLO EVERYBUDDY!! I have finally reached 50 followers!!!! *pulls the party poppers* Time for a celebration!! ^^

Actually this was more of a mandatory milestone post and I would say numbers don’t matter too much to me and its a small number compared to some of yours heheh but its more of quality conversations I love HAHA. However, most importantly, I would still really like to thank all of you existing followers because without you, there would never been this post and I wouldn’t have come so far!!! Even though I am not sure how many people are actually phantom followers, but thank you for following me all the same ❤

thank you minions

A special shoutout goes to the people who have been showing massive support for me all this while, in no order of merit: LitaKino, Otakurui, justanotheranimefan, Takuto, renxkyoko, josefcd904, Lovely, lehzalee, Keatle, The Otaku Judge, CheesyJ, somethingaboutlynlyn THANK YOU for playing a part in making my WordPress journey so amazing amd for taking time to read and comment on my posts, it really helped me and gave me a lot of motivation to write. For those whom I have not mentioned and are reading this, I realised I’d have to stop naming people at some point HAHA otherwise I would end up having this long list of names. xD But in any case, my love for all followers and frequent readers knows no bounds :p

*hugs*

*hugs*

I would say that I never expected to find such a supportive community here. Previously I had the conception that blogging was a very lonely activity even if I was talking about something I loved. But I am glad that here I have found people who are actually interested in what I have to say, and in turn, I am spurred to write more and in a better way. My previous blog in blogger shriveled and died simply because it came to a point where it became hard to sustain the continual interest in writing because of the lack of feedback I needed. I really hope that this blog won’t end up in that kind of situation xD

In any case, I really hope we continue to have more interesting conversations and I look forward to more interactions in the future! 🙂 (I think this is probably my shortest post ever oops xP)

A Letter to Readers: Personal Updates and Advice Needed

Dear Readers,

My greatest ideas for this blog are usually born when I am on the train being squeezed like a pack of sardines or when I am strolling amicably towards my workplace or school, trying to pump myself up with Positive Thoughts that self-help books always mention are absolutely necessary for a great day ahead.

Or rather, I force myself to think the words of Positive Thoughts. Maybe something along the lines of ‘You are intelligent and beautiful’ or ‘Live like there is no tomorrow’. Somehow when each word is strung into a sentence, the individual parts seem to be worth more than the sum of its parts.

Its just words, I think to myself.

I think it, but I get bored of trying to repeat it ten times in a row in my head. My brain immediately leaps to other points of interest.

Ideas for my blog.

From what I remember, they include new segments. Segments like a Truth or Truth section, where I think of a random question, anime/manga-related or blogging-principle-related, and ask readers like you what you think. A Personal Life section, where I talk about personal life. Or a section dedicated to random topic where I write about snippets of my beliefs and values (which can be a little unconventional) and ask you to share (lamely named, due to a lack of creative juices, Random Topics”. Examples of topics include Marriage (I actually have a draft post on this which I am deciding about whether to continue), Introversion (or Extroversion), Procrastination. Also, my reigning style of blogging – whether I should blog snarkily or enthusiastically.

So I decide why don’t I heck all that planning and just write whatever and however I feel like writing. Which is what I am doing now, precisely. And now you are probably wondering what the heck is this post all about. Before I lose all potential and existing viewership, let me dive into the essence of this post proper.

Firstly, a proper introduction is needed for the current new segments of my blog.

Recently, I have tried to re-organise my content a little better. If you are actually at my blog interface rather than on WordPress Reader, you may or may not have noticed that I have added new sub-categories to existing categories available in the drop-down menu at the top. I also decided it was nigh time that did some sort of ranking related post, so I have done two posts of my Top 25 Anime List , which is a start. I also added a new category named Musings of an Asian Girl in an Asian Society, which features a more argumentative style of writing on social issues which may be controversial, from my perspective, where its first post can be found here. I have also added a new Contact Me page (see above menu). Seeing that this is one of the first random posts I have written, I suppose this warrants a new category as well.

Secondly, some updates about my personal plus anime watching life.

I have been lurking around WordPress more for this past week and the weekend immediately preceding mainly because my boss at the place I am interning is on leave for the week and I have been hopping out of the office when the clock strikes six. I have been also prioritising WordPress over watching anything, which can seem a little strange. However, that lurking may or may not stop soon when my boss comes back and I end up having to bring work home and work till 1am, which has happened. Hence as of now, I am trying to churn out more posts, though I am aware my posting hasn’t substantially increased and this probably isn’t really counted (…)

As for watching anime, I have actually been watching some ongoing series but I have stopped at around episode 5 thereabouts. A brilliant idea that has struck me is to simply wait till all the episodes come out (nearly there at this point in time) and try to watch everything at one go so I don’t have such incomplete impressions which happened to me for the last season (RIP, review for Durarara x2 Shou). As of now, the series I am watching are strictly Owari no Seraph, Fate Stay Night UBW Second Season, Sidonia no Kishi Second Season, Plastic Memories, Arslan Senki, Kekkai Sensen, Shoukugeki no Souma and Uta no Prince Sama 3000%. I am also partly watching Parasyte and Mushishi , the latter which is approaching its one year mark soon since I started it.

I have also been watching Game of Thrones, and I have yet to watch the finale of season 5 so no spoilers please.

Thirdly and most importantly, I need ideas from you guys.

I am openly soliciting for concrete ideas for my Musings segment. I am aware some people have responded positively to it, and I am really keen on writing posts like that because I like using my brain and writing argumentatively. However, I can’t really decide on a topic, since the last one was inspired by another blogger’s post. (1) So, is there any controversial topic or any social issue that you would find interesting to be discussed thoroughly?

(2) Also, what do you think of those ideas I had about the new segments right at the top of this post? I am aware they have nothing much to do with anime or manga, but I also want to know how receptive you guys are to posts to do with bloggers themselves (me), or if you are mainly interested in anime and manga reviews, editorials and analysis. Of course, this is predominantly an anime/manga blog so all those posts will still be up and coming, but this is all part of an idea to diversify the type of content available here.

I would be very very much appreciative of you guys

Love,

Shiroyuni (:

Jan 15 and Feb 15 Updates!

As I have mentioned in my previous post, I am going to list out what anime I have been watching so far and have yet to have completed; and also a mid-way opinion on it and whether I recommend that particular series or not 😀 Gonna split this up into two sections here 🙂

*what I mean by episode count is the current episode I am on, not the number that has been released so far!

Currently Airing (Winter 15)

Aldnoah Zero 2nd Season

Genres: AAldnoah.Zero 2nd Seasonction, Mecha

Episode count: 3/12

Plot summary: Seeking for revenge, Count Saazbaum, a Martian, attacked the Earth. Later on, the war between the Terrans and Martians ended with Earth’s Terrans gaining the victory. However, nineteen months later, the battle between them continues. Martians still continues to invade the Earth and the Terrans to protect it.

How’s it so far: Not bad for a second season. Slaine is shaping up to be a more interesting character than the first season. And who doesn’t like watching Inaho being so calmly badass and smoothly dissecting his enemy’s weaknesses and winning? Its pure entertainment for sure. Watching the harems develop is really hilarious as well.

Recommended if: You have watched the first season. And you like mecha fights. And badassery,

Not recommended if: You don’t like slightly one-dimensional characters or bland dialogue.

Ansatsu Kyoushitsu TV

Genres: Action, Comedy, School, Supernatural

Episode Count: 6/22Ansatsu Kyoushitsu (TV)

Plot Summary: A humorous and action-packed story about a class of misfits who are trying to kill their new teacher—an alien octopus with bizarre powers and super strength! The teacher has just destroyed the moon and is threatening to destroy the earth—unless his students can destroy him first. What makes things more complicated is that he’s the best teacher they’ve ever had!

How’s it so far: Interesting premise, hilarious comedy. Some interesting themes about teaching and education. But I personally don’t see what is the rage about this.

Recommended if: you have read the manga, and you would like to see it animated.

Not recommended if: you have too little time to try something new, and teacher-student dynamics are not your thing.

Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu LOVE! (i.e. Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE!)

Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu LOVE!Genres: Comedy, Magic, Slice of Life

Episode Count: 6/12

Plot Summary: This is the tale of five unlikely heroes who unite under the name of the “Earth Defense Club” alongside a pink wombat-like alien to defend their world and restore love to all; however, does a sinister organization lurk behind the scenes of Binan High school?

How’s it so far: FINALLY A MAHOU SHOUNEN SERIES. The transformation scenes are totally hilarious; and its a very good parody of the usual mahou shoujo type of anime.

Recommended if: You want to see something that defies typical mahou shoujo gender stereotypes. (Yes, calling all Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki Kun fans here). Or if you would want a good laugh at the end of a long, stress-filled day. Or if … you just like watching bishies prancing around in ridiculous costumes. Oh, and also if you don’t mind the rather strong bromance vibes (Calling FREE! fans)

Not Recommended if: You prefer your mahou shoujo as they are, untouched.

Death Parade

Death ParadeGenres: Game, Psychological

Episode count: 7/12

Plot Summary: After death, humans go to either heaven or hell. But for some, at the instant of their death, they arrive at Quindecim, a bar attended by the mysterious white-haired Decim. He challenges them to the Death Game, wherein they wager their lives and reveal their true natures. Decim himself is the ultimate arbitrator of who wins and who loses, who will go to heaven, and who will go to hell.

How’s it so far: Absolutely brilliant. There hasn’t been a single anime I have encountered that broke me down into a puddle of tears one episode and had me laughing so hard the next. The dark side of human nature is forced to light here so it sometimes comes as a shock that some of those negative sentiments resound within me. For an episodic series, side characters’ backstories are explained so well that enable one to empathise with them and their actions. I personally like the themes explored here, and I have fun thinking about whether Decim’s judgment is morally wrong or correct.

Recommended if: You like your entertainment to be thought-provoking, and you are looking for some depth. You like delving into moral gray areas. I personally recommend this anime to all 🙂

Not recommended if: You are just looking for light, fun anime.

Durarara!!x2 Shou

Genres: Action, Mystery, Supernatural, Urban

Durarara!!x2 ShouEpisode Count: 5/12

Plot Summary: Half a year after the turmoil that rocked the entire city of Ikebukuro – Peace has once again returned to the city and people are living each day normally. The high school students enjoy their days of youth as the strongest and most dangerous man of Ikebukuro works diligently. The informant plots (or plans) a new scheme and the headless rider is pursued by the cops as she rides through the night… But soon this normal will be cut short by the abnormal. Slowly but surely, the unknown will seize the city and face an all new storm.

How’s it so far: Absolutely captivating. This is one series set out to entertain. There may be some confusion sometimes due to its disjunct narrative structure, but it all pays off when the pieces all fall together, like a finished jigsaw puzzle. This series really pulls off quirky, entertaining characters that are unique in themselves. If there’s any cast of characters that I would like to be friends with, its this set.

Recommended if: You have watched the first season. Even if you haven’t, please do give it a try, its awesome 😀 If you are looking for a very unique way of telling a story and you are in love with the idea of one person’s actions affecting another, and then setting off a chain of unexpected events, with an unexpected conclusion.

Not recommended if: You really don’t have brain juice to spare, and you just want a linear plot of sorts. But really, this is NEVER not recommended. 😀

Soukyuu no Fafner: Dead Aggressor – Exodus

Genres: Drama, Mecha, Sci-fi

Soukyuu no Fafner: Dead Aggressor - ExodusEpisode Count: 7/26

Plot Summary: MAL doesn’t provide one, lol.

How’s it so far: About as confusing the first season. There is vast improvement in the action scenes though. Some of them look like they belong to Shingeki no Kyojin except that they are fighting in giant robots. Great exploration of the theme of making children fight to protect humanity.

Recommended if: You have watched the first season, and you like the overall feel of the show. Also, awesome action mecha scenes.

Not recommended if: You hate being confused. I personally still have troubles understanding this show, and there isn’t much help online either ><

Tokyo Ghoul √A

Genres: Action, Mystery, Drama, Horror, Supernatural, Psychological, Seinen

Tokyo Ghoul √AEpisode count: 7/12

Plot Summary: In modern day Tokyo, society lives in fear of Ghouls: mysterious creatures who look exactly like humans — yet hunger insatiably for their flesh. None of this matters to Ken Kaneki, a bookish and ordinary young man, until a dark and violent encounter turns him into the first ever Ghoul-human half breed. Trapped between two worlds, Ken must survive the violent conflicts of warring Ghoul factions, while attempting to learn more about Ghoul society, his newfound powers, and the fine line between man and monster.

How’s it so far: More interesting than I would have thought. Though Kaneki doesn’t feature much at the start, we see his involvement behind the scenes. Kaneki gets more development and so do the other characters.

Recommended if: You watched the first season, and you personally like how Kaneki develops and deals with all that crap thrown his way. Or you like tortured, brooding protagonists with a kind heart.

Not recommended if: You are looking for a faithful manga adaptation. Or you just don’t like horror and gore in genre. Other than that, it is a pretty good show ^^

Non-airing anime but planning to finish

Ashita no Nadja (not sure whether I want to continue this, though.)

Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou

Mushishi

Samurai Flamenco (just started this)

White Album 2 (just started this)

Yep that’s all from me! 🙂 Feel free to comment about anything or agree/disagree with me on what I have said so far 😀 I may not be doing reviews for all of these anime even if I have completed them though, it’ll have to depend on whether I have anything much to write about the anime 🙂

Clarifications on the way I post :)

Hello everybody! ^^ Following my last personal post relating to the Liebster award, I realised that I haven’t actually laid out certain principles that I follow in running this blog, which may be a little confusing to readers. To be honest, this started out as a personal blog, so I thought as long as I knew what I was doing it’ll all be fine and I didn’t actually need to say anything.

However, I guess I got influenced by LitaKino’s contagious way of posting that I felt that I at least had to write down certain things about the way I post.

Firstly, all the past anime reviews I have done on this blog were actually series I had watched some time ago (e.g. 1 to 2 months). Between the time that I had watched those series and writing the review, I only relied on very short, random personal notes that I had written down during the course of the show to write my review. Hence those were based on month-old impressions at least, and hopefully more objective ones. It also means that I have an anime review backlog to clear.

However, the same does not apply for manga. This is because I only really started reading more manga when I started this blog so I decided to write manga reviews immediately after I finished it. Also, I believe I have less ability to retain plot details about manga for a longer period of time, hence the rush to finish a manga review is real.

That’s all I have for now 🙂 I am also going to expand on my About page after publishing this post, so you can go read it if you guys want to know more about this random person publishing random opinions and drawing random links between anime, manga, literary themes and plot devices on the net.

I will also do a post on what I am currently watching soon, together with some manga and reviews.

That’s all I have for now and thanks for reading 😀

Liebster Award: Nomination by LitaKino and Chibi Majo

Thank you so much LitaKino and Chibi Majo, both awesome anime bloggers and wonderful people <3,  for nominating me for the Liebster award all in a single day! 😀 I feel very touched and honoured to be recognised by people like you in the anime blogging community; and I would think that its every blogger’s dream to have people reading what they have to say :’)

So as part of the rules, I will answer 11 questions posed to me by the nominator(s), and I’ll start with LitaKino’s one first!:

1. What made you start your anime blog?

I have been watching anime for some time and with each anime I watched I had a thousand thoughts swirling in my head. I thought they were useless for a long time until one day there was this EUREKA! moment (lol) where I thought: hey, why not put these things down into words? Otherwise no one would know what you are thinking because your thoughts are never gonna be said, spoken or written.

So here we are 🙂

2. Ice cream or pie?

T.T can I choose both??  Especially vanilla ice cream eaten together with New Zealand apple pie fresh from the oven? Pretty please with a cherry on top? 🙂

3. What is the most expensive thing anime wise you have bought?

I’m so sorry!!! For such a big anime fan I have yet to buy any merchandise except for two badges. My parents are really strict on me owning anything physical that is anime related so I confine my love for anime things to online ;_; here’s my two badges on my pencil case though!

2015-02-22 21.06.49

4. What other hobbies do you have?

A lot; I barely have time to do anything argh. Anime and manga are at the top of my list, followed by watching TV drama series (usually American, or Chinese historical), reading novels (mostly YA and general fiction for English novels, web novels for Chinese novels), gaming (RPGs, otome games). Writing can be considered as of now 🙂 Also, playing the piano and violin, jogging, daydreaming 😀

5. What is your current opinion on how the world is?

Two words: messed up. Especially with too many negative things happening in the world right now (I just need to read current affairs to feel depressed). There’s too much to say on this topic in my honest opinion :/

6. Do you have a favourite genre of anime you like to watch?

This is a really tough question for me; because I basically try everything and I like anything that has a good story and relatable characters (though I tend to avoid ecchi and harem types). Looking at my MAL statistics page, however, I think my favourite genre is mecha: yes, giant robots. Why? I like the action, and it almost always involves themes like war and military. (Yes Gundam, looking right at you here.)

7. Is there an anime character that you would really like to cosplay?

Hmm tough one. I am not really into cosplay, but if I ever did I would want to cosplay as somebody that I can reasonably say I look more like 🙂 So it would have to be Uni from Katekyo Hitman Reborn – she’s adorable and one of my favourite ‘little girl’ characters. She also has a hairstyle I would love try out and I daresay I am small enough to be able to pull it off 😀

8. What is one anime thing you are stalking to buy currently?

At this point in time, I really want either a figure of Tobio Kageyama from Haikyuu! or any poster/display related merchandise pertaining to Strobe Edge, HIrunaka no Ryuusei or Kuroko no Basket.

9. Do you think wordpress is an easy blog site to use?

Definitely easier than blogspot! Plus it has the wonderful feature of Reader and tags so I can easily find posts I want to read 😀

10. Do you have any favorite anime reviewers you love to follow?

Basically anybody who writes their own opinions is potentially a favourite for me xD not to mention the blogs of the lovely people who have nominated me and whom I am currently following! A special shoutout to otakurui because she writes really insightful stuff and her tastes really mirror mine 🙂 I also check out http://www.reverseharem.blogspot.com regularly since it has the most comprehensive information and reviews relating to reverse harem anything 🙂 And ultimately Entravity (who does hilarious reviews) and Randomc (perhaps the most famous anime review site on the net?)

11. Do you have an anime crush?

Omg, this is probably the hardest question to answer when you have multiple anime crushes xD. Currently its Tobio Kageyama from Haikyuu!! and Kuroko from Kuroko no Basket 🙂

Whew xD now on to Chibi Majo’s questions!

1. What made you start blogging?

I actually started out writing personal stuff on another blog; but gradually I kind of grew out of it and that blog stagnated. I actually wrote many anime reviews over there but they are rather juvenile I am afraid. I actually answered this question above (check out no. 1) but generally, I really want to improve my writing skills as well 🙂

2. What are your hobbies?

Answered this above as well 🙂 (check out no. 4!)

3. Favourite food?

Japanese mille crepe cake 😀 Japanese flavoured sweets have a lighter and more refreshing taste to it 🙂 tried the French one before but it was ultimately too rich for me!

4. Favourite movie?

My all time favourite is a Chinese one called Red Cliff; its based on historical events in China during the Three Kingdoms era (the anime Kingdom is also based on this story). But currently its really the Imitation Game 😀

5. How long have you been blogging for?

I started this blog only in Dec 2014, but to be honest I have been blogging on another blog since 2 years ago. Even in secondary school I had been blogging in a private one. So um, at least 7 years? But I blogged very little last time and its all personal and angsty and full of teenage mood swings 🙂

6. Favourite song?

Zomg. HOW DO I ANSWER THIS. There are too many! But I would have to go for To the Beginning, the OP for Fate Zero Second Season, by Kalafina. Its the only song that manages to move me to tears even now, 1.5 years after I finished that anime. The feels of that anime are strong :’)

7. Best ice cream flavour?

AHAHAHA. I can’t answer omg I am too fickle minded xD I would have to go with mint chocolate chip because it always cheers me up 🙂

8. Favourite celebrity?

Kevin Cheng, he’s a Hong Kong actor and he’s really good at acting. There are plenty of people like him who are good looking and have superb acting skills; but I like him the most because I feel that his personality is really close to mine 😀

9. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

JAPAN JAPAN JAPAN I WANNA SEE CHERRY BLOSSOMS especially Akihabara I think its the anime capital !!!

10. Do you like playing sport?

I am actually quite bad at sports. I am pretty short even for an Asian so nobody ever wanted me in their teams especially when I also don’t have much hand-eye coordination. I like swimming and jogging; but they are solitary sports 🙂

11. How often do you go on social media?

How about everyday? I am perpetually on Facebook all the time because that’s how I communicate with my real life friends. I have a like-hate relationship with it though. :/

Okay now 11 random facts about myself:

1. I am Asian, Chinese actually. (but I am not from/a citizen of/reside in China)

2. My ultimate guilty pleasure is to read true blue reverse harem Chinese novels for young adults (menage a trois English/American ones have too much sex and hormones; not really for me.)

3. I am a very shy and socially awkward person.

4. I find myself unable to let myself truly loose, wild and crazy with even people I am closer to in real life; mainly because I am only crazy over anime/manga and these people don’t watch anime/manga.

5. I was accepted into a couple of UK and Australian universities including LSE and ANU to study Economics after I finished my A levels, but I didn’t go overseas to study in the end due to many reasons including financial ones. I am still sincerely apologetic to whoever who didn’t get a place because of me :/

6. I am a girl (LOL) and 22 this year.

7. I am a worrier; I am afraid that the job that I would get after graduating falls far below the worth of my current degree.

8. I use MAL a lot other than this site; feel free to check it out or talk to me on there if you are an active user of it: http://www.myanimelist.net/profile/twlightgal5

9. I technically do not belong to any religion; but I am closer to Taoism/Buddhism (I always pray at these temples)

10. I am just at 5 feet (152 cm) because I stopped growing at around 13 years old I believe.

11. I have very few friends lol. PLEASE BE FRIENDS WITH ME IF YOU AREN’T YET :>

Now for the Official Rules of the Liebster Award:

If you have been nominated for The Liebster Award AND YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT IT, write a blog post about the Liebster award in which you:

  • Thank the person who nominated you, and post a link to their blog on your blog.
  • Display the award on your blog — by including it in your post and/or displaying it using a “widget” or a “gadget”. (Note that the best way to do this is to save the image to your own computer and then upload it to your blog post.)
  • Answer 11 questions about yourself, which will be provided to you by the person who nominated you.
  • Provide 11 random facts about yourself.
  • Nominate 5 – 11 blogs that you feel deserve the award, who have a less than 1000 followers. (Note that you can always ask the blog owner this since not all blogs display a widget that lets the readers know this information!)
  • Create a new list of questions for the blogger to answer.
  • List these rules in your post (You can copy and paste from here.) Once you have written and published it, you then have to:
  • Inform the people/blogs that you nominated that they have been nominated for the Liebster award and provide a link for them to your post so that they can learn about it (they might not have ever heard of it!).

Here are the people I nominate for the award. Since I actually follow and know very few bloggers I am just gonna put some of you who have already been nominated cos you guys do deserve to be known more! (you can choose to not answer the questions if you have already been nominated; but of course I’d be very happy if you did :D):

Anime Ataraxia: just recently followed! wide coverage of content!

Baka Thoughts: this person really needs more recognition! Her reviews are insightful and I like the way she writes 🙂

Wakuwafu: gem of anime reviews; and a really pretty web design and layout!

Questions that I am providing:

1. What is your definition of happiness?

2. What is more important to you in an anime that you would call good: plot or characters? (assuming you can only pick one)

3. Favourite novel?

4. Favourite drama or TV series?

5. Favourite anime OP or ED?

6. Favourite male and female seiyuu?

7. An interesting story/event about yourself?

8. What Japanese custom/tradition/event would you like to try the most?

9. How important is writing to you?

10. Most beautifully drawn anime/manga character you have ever seen?

11.  What kind of scenery do you love the most? (e.g. rivers, mountains, Aurora lights etc. best if you could also put a pic here! :D)

And that concludes my first personal post ever as a shoutout to all my followers! ^^ Thank you for taking your time to read this, and thanks to the two bloggers once again for nominating me 🙂 I had so much fun writing this ❤
