Personal Update: When Feeling Uninspired

I realised I haven’t done an update for at least a year or so. At the very least, not in the form of this very casual, conversational-like tone which I am using right now. The past posts that are similar to this are either posts on self-reflection, or posts that generally aim to tell a narrative of sorts. Not this tone that some of you see glimpses of on Twitter (given that 140 characters do not give you much to work with from the start anyways.)

But the main problem for me is that I have been feeling rather uninspired, both in terms of writing and even anime-watching in general. What I usually do to think of what to write about the next week is to scroll through all the anime I recently completed to see what inspires me. I actually do try as much as possible to shy away from reviews because I think my voice is generic at best there. There are people who can analyse, critique and break down an anime series into its production values to evaluate and recommend it. Just adding one more to the mix, particularly when I am not very good at it, doesn’t seem like the greatest idea to me.

Particularly also because the most recent anime I have completed are mostly the major names you hear in the 2015 run-up. I do have some ideas here and there for different anime that can be expanded into posts, but I am either too lazy to actually write them now or to plan on how to write it. Let me give you an example of what I mean by listing down the ideas I have:

  • Family as a Theme in Noragami Aragoto
  • In Defense of Charlotte
  • Reasons Why Everybody Should Watch Princess Tutu
  • Altruism and Idealism in Gatchaman Crowds

… just to name a few. The thing is, they all require some planning and research, given that there are some details of the stories that I have already forgotten, and which I need to know before being able to write them in all truth. They definitely aren’t walk-in-the-park types of posts (unlike this one ahem.) Most importantly, if I am not wrong, some of these have already been used as blog post ideas by other bloggers if I know about it. (I can’t read every single blog post, so I just go with what I know.) And I dislike, as well as try very much not to, write about topics that have already been touched on by others, especially if I feel my analysis isn’t grounded enough, factual or argument-wise. I mean, I do have my own takes on the topics, but my views overall still converge somewhat with others and some of my lines of thinking may very well not hold much water.

The next point is where the anime I am watching is being less inspiring than usual. Currently, I am actually watching Hunter x Hunter (2011). Not that its not inspiring, but its harder to analyse it from my perspective (I find that its hard to think of something to write, other than a review of course, for popular long shounens). Also, its a long anime, and given that I still have limited time to watch anime, it means I am not watching practically anything else for some time. That also means lesser content for writing for the time being.

Or, I could go back to do my SNAFU series, which I actually put on hold (and still remember, yes) mainly because I haven’t been in the SNAFU-watching mood lately. And I don’t want to watch it just because I need something to write about – that would totally destroy it for me.

Oh and, I am watching Erased due to the recommendations of Sebbo12 and another friend (I call him a WP lurker for now. He doesn’t know this, but after this is posted maybe he would), but I generally like to wait till a series to finish airing before I write about it.

Its probably a ‘mood’ thing. I think.

I mean, I could also cheat and continue telling you guys stories about myself and my self-reflections, but I think it would probably bore all of you. Even award posts look less appetising for now because I think Twitter already does a great job at exposing me to the point that I can’t think much ‘facts’ about myself anymore without literally baring my closet.

What I ask from you guys for now is to be patient while I think of something that is worth writing about. Or, you guys can give me suggestions or talk to me to inspire me.

That’s all for now. Thanks for reading, feel free to comment and have a good day while I figure out myself. 🙂

  1. Ahhh shiro all us bloggers have felt like that. You know people will always be here whenever you post something and you won’t feel it fun if you force yourself to post something. You will find something that will randomly spark you like I am rewatching Rurouni Kenshin at the moment for the third time but it has been years since I revisited this series, from that I felt inspired to an in depth looking into the series of why I love it. Finally after me stopping to avoid writing because I was in a semi mood, seems once I started writing couldn’t stop.

You blog something when you feel inspired I like the idea of reasons to watch princess tutu one 🙂 and I say BLEHHH HUMBUG to people who have already talked about shows from 2015 if you want to write about a show like charlotte for example then do it!! every opinion is different on anything everything. Pssst. my next anime review is going to be a popular series… but it’s been reviewed many times??? LITA DON’T CARE !! I’m going to do because there people who wish to hear my opinion on it and simply want to do it.

I wanted to say on you watching hunter x hunter atm I don’t have a desire to watch that series for a long while, all the hype over it hasn’t drawn me in my focus is always on obscure, unknown titles as you know. I find getting inspiration or watching shows like that get my brain going. If you would like some short 12 episodes anime unknown series I’ll gladly lend a hand if your tired of watching hunter x hunter

I know a post I’d love to see from you talking about your favorite anime film that be interesting to hear from you and also your anime boy crushes XD

Well there is my how to advice for you shiro but dear do it all in your own stride. I’ll be here always waiting for a shiro post to appear XD

    • Haha yeah exactly I am waiting for the random sparks to hit me, even when now. 🙂 It was just that there weren’t any particularly very good anime in the stuff I have recently watched, so it was a little bit of a downer in terms of writing.

Thank you, I hope that I will eventually find the ‘mood’ and courage to write about things even if I think I may merely be repeating what some other people are saying. I like your carefree attitude on this Lita, I’ll probably recognise the anime then! 😀

Ah, I actually find Hunter x Hunter a very good show to watch. I just cannot find anything to ‘analyse’ about it, because that’s how I write some of my posts. I sometimes think a mere review wouldn’t do it justice haha 🙂 But watching a long series can get quite tiring haha. I don’t mind 13 eps of an unknown series just to watch at the side 😀 Do tell me some recs you have!

Ooh haha unfortunately I haven’t watched many anime films which is why I haven’t been writing on them 🙂 And sure, anime boy crushes sound like a good one, and the list is an easy one to make xD

Yay! Thanks for the long comment and offer of support Lita! 😀 I really appreciate it 🙂

      • Your welcome Shiro I’m sure I won’t be the only one showing you support on this 🙂 Glad you are enjoying hunter x hunter may some day I’ll watch it but have too many others i wish to collect and blog about XD

So here is some short series suggestions you might enjoy not sure but give them a crack if you like

        Inu x Boku SS
        Midori days
        Mayo chiko
        jubei the ninja girl
        Please twins
        The sacred blacksmith
        the familiar of zero

There are some suggestions for you dear that I enjoyed XD

        Liked by 1 person

      • Haha yep I know that feeling. Too many anime that you are interested in and too much backlog to clear 🙂
Thanks for all the suggestions! I liked Inu x Boku SS well enough, so I’ll probably try out the rest, especially the ones I haven’t heard as much 🙂

  2. Hey Shiro. I like your real talk right here. There is nothing wrong with not posting often or lacking particular motivation. You know me! I for sure do not post very often. But I find peace in knowing that I have cool cats like you who enjoy reading my rubbish whenever it gets published. It feels great to have blogging friends who appreciate my voice. So you should know I feel the same about you!

You are a unique voice and there is no fault in talking about shows that have already been hit. I personally would love to hear you defend Charlotte! I loved that show! Too many blokes are talking smack about it! We need more voices talking about all the cool things it did, and less on it’s shortcomings.

Don’t fret Shiro, you have plenty of followers and viewers, so there is nothing to worry about. We will be excited when you drop a post. And we will be cool with just chilling when you’re not dropping posts. The point is, we little bloggers look out for one another, so we will support your times of prolific writing as well as your moments of quiet.

    Cheers,
    Twice

    • Hey Twice 🙂 You’re right, I do enjoy reading your stuff whenever you are inspired to write, because it shows. Now all that’s left for me is to believe that you feel the same way as well. 🙂

Haha I agree about Charlotte. There are too many people criticizing it to death, when I can see all its better stuff. I sometimes fret that the quality of my writing ‘drops’ when I write something that others have written, but I’ll try to believe that my voice is still ultimately enough to make a difference in this humongous aniblogging world.

Thanks so much for dropping such a long heartfelt comment, Twice! The sincerity in what you say has reached me. It feels good to read reassurances like this. I feel insecure way too much haha. Thanks for dropping in on this! (: Cheers, Shiro

  3. I think it’s a good idea to have a short break to distance yourself from blogging for a while. I think you’re over-exposed when it comes to other anime reviews/posts. Maybe some distance will trigger fresh ideas so you can regain your motivation and enthusiasm in blogging again. It works on me (most of the time), so I hope that it works for you, too. But you know what? It’s not like we’re going to abandon you just because you don’t have any new posts lately. We’ll still be here until you get your groove back. Good luck. Cheers!

    Liked by 2 people

    • Yep, I have been thinking about this ‘over-exposure’, and its true that it – may – be one of the causes of my feeling of saturation. Perhaps I should try this ‘distance’thing as well, it sounds like something that’s worth a try.

Thanks for this comment, Arria! I really appreciate it. Cheers to you too 🙂

  4. Hey Shiro, sorry to hear that you are going through this. I hope you get inspired to blog whatever you feel like doing. The topics you mentioned above sounds interesting. Just like LitaKino said, we are here whenever you post something and you shouldn’t post something if you feeling forced. You should post if for fun and if you feel like it. Don’t worry about us, we care about you. 🙂

    • Thanks Matt! I am taking it slow for now, and only when I feel like it 🙂 I set personal goals of blogging once a week at the beginning of this year, and the stress had been building up for some time. It just wasn’t as much before I actually really ran out of steam. But thanks for the support and assurances, I really appreciate it 🙂

      Liked by 2 people

      • You’re welcome, everyone here in WP care about you :). Try to pace yourself with your blog. If you need a break once in a while, then you should take one. It’s good for your head :).

        Liked by 1 person

      • :’) Yeah I do think I need to take a slower pace with this sometimes. And of course fit it into my anime watching schedule. I guess I am always too afraid of losing people since I don’t update as much, hence the stress >< But it also feels good not to think too much about the blog once in a while. xD

        Liked by 1 person

      • I see and I understand. Don’t worry, we will be here for you. I am also afraid of losing my friends online as well, you are not alone. Sometimes I take breaks and I won’t post at least two times a week. So don’t worry Shiro, we will still be here for you thinking about you even when you take breaks 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      • Hehe I believe I am on a semi-break right now given that I haven’t exactly thought of writing anything yet xD Yeah its something that I worry about, since online presence its so fleeting and all >< Yaay! I am happy to know that 🙂 And that's honestly one of the best reassurances you could give as a reader ^^

        Liked by 1 person

      • Whatever it helps you, you should take a break once in a while. It makes me happy to know that someone is feeling happy and not stressed. If you still want to talk to without blogging, you can always contact me in email. I will be here 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      • Haha yeah, and I think that’s precisely what I am doing now oops. Thanks for your reassurances again Matt, I really appreciate it 🙂 And I would, if I need to talk to you more (which may be soon, I really don’t know xD) I’m kind of drowning in work nowadays, but I’ll see how it goes 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      • Your welcome and I am glad to be here. Aww that’s sweet of you ro say that. Same here for me. I am always glad to come back to WP. People like you are the ones I look forward to the most. You guys are amazing bloggers :).

        Liked by 1 person

      • Haha yeah that’s exactly what I feel too! It sounds cheesy/lame but that’s how I would describe it too 🙂 sometimes I think these online friends care about me more than some of my ‘real life friends’. Never thought I’d feel that way tbh haha 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      • It’s not cheesy. It it a comforting feeling to have. Sometimes online friends can be caring as life friends. It’s great to have online friends. I love all you guys 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      • Haha yes its the same for me. Though I think its mainly just WordPress haha, where people are nice are generally leave nice comments. On other types of blogs, I see way too many nasty comments. ><

        Liked by 1 person

      • I am always afraid of facing nasty comments. I talked to people here online as if I am talking to them in person. Pretty much like the old saying: “treat others with respect and they will respect you”. I try my best to avoid rude people and always to stay kind to others.

        Liked by 1 person

      • Haha yeah. That’s what I do too. Though it doesn’t mean I get unaffected if and when I read something rude directed to me. It’s one thing in the subconscious, one thing in the conscious. ><

        Liked by 1 person

      • I understand. I guess people online take advantage of saying whatever is in their head. They think it’s easy to talk online because they don’t have to be face to face with someone.

        Liked by 1 person

      • Yeah unfortunately, that’s an attitude that comes with being behind a screen. I mean sometimes I can take comfort in that fact too, but that doesn’t mean you can just be overly mean to people either.

        Liked by 1 person

      • That’s true. I try to maintain a good posture and remind myself that talking to someone online is like talking to others in person. I try my best to think before I say something. I don’t want give people the wrong ideas.

        Liked by 1 person

      • Haha yep, especially when it can come across very wrong online because you feel the tone or see any facial expressions. That is why I generally like to use emoticons or ‘useless phrases’ like ‘haha’ to lighten the mood. xD

        Liked by 1 person

      • Yeah absolutely, I use stuff like that to the point that I think my comments have too much stuff like ‘haha’ and emoticons xD I like these mood-setters though ^^ I always think a person’s tone sounds very indifferent without these emoticons.

        Liked by 1 person

      • I noticed that too now that you mentioned it. A regular comment would just be a plain statement. Emojis, like you mentioned, help make an conversation fun. I guess I can see why people love them haha.

        Liked by 1 person

      • Oh wow. I thought emojis only existed through apps like Whatsapp, not on their own xD I don’t mind typing simple emojis out myself, but of course they are pretty limited in expression. :p

        Liked by 1 person

      • I think there are some phones out there with installed emojis in the keyboard. My phone has a lot. I have Samsung Galaxy S6. I prefer typing on laptop for faster typing haha. My thumbs are too big for the buttons on my phone. XD

        Liked by 1 person

      • Oh I see. Maybe that’s why. I am not too familiar with Samsung Galaxy myself because I use an iPhone. Haha yes exactly, my fingers aren’t too big for the phone but laptop typing is definitely easier and faster for me too xD

        Liked by 1 person

      • Oh you have an iPhone. That’s cool, most of my family uses it but I prefer Android. I agree with you the laptop. It’s much faster and I can multitask while I relax. It also saves energy on my phone. XD
Before I forget, Happy Resurrection/Easter Day!

        Liked by 1 person

      • Oh haha. I use an iPhone only because I am lazy to switch to Android and learn how to use all the accessory stuff (like connecting to my laptop, knowing what apps exist and don’t). I am multitasking right now :p Oh yes, I always use messaging functions that are accessible by laptop so that I can type. I am too lazy to type much on my phone too :p
Hope you had a great Easter as well Matt! 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      • Thank you and happy Easter 🐰
I like Android because of the widgets and being able to use the “back button”. I like iPods too for the music. I haven’t much dug deep on what my phone can do. I use it for games, talking and browsing XD. I tend to also multitask with laptop and phone haha.

        Liked by 1 person

      • Haha I see. I have no idea what the back button is though xD I never owned an iPod either hehe. Yup, that’s what we use phones mainly for right? I have never dig too deeply into what else my phone can do too. I don’t even play games on it hahaha – I only have location apps, or those for travel convenience etc. I usually chuck my phone aside when I have my laptop though :p

        Liked by 1 person

      • Well to clarify things, the back button on Androids is just a way for users to backtrack to their previous activity as opposed to pressing home. Android users have a home, tabs and button in front. It’s kinda hard to describe lol.
Seems like you like to travel. That’s the benefit of having travel or location apps, you can just pull out the gps and you can find your way haha. I prefer just using the laptop. It’s much faster than using a keyboard on the phone haha.

        Liked by 1 person

      • Ohh I see. That makes sense, and the explanation sounds familiar. I think it’s like how it’s used for other platforms as well even if it doesn’t exist for iPhone 😅 even though I don’t exactly use Gps much, I still use the other ‘life’ apps, and maps in general. I also generally reply to WP comments on the laptop because it’s too much to type on phone. XD

        Liked by 1 person

      • Interesting. I have the WP app on my phone but I use it for fast commenting or just browse through sites. It’s kinda like my own Twitter haha. Sometimes I will use my phone for the emojis. I prefer using my laptop for the keyboard and other stuff. I don’t use much of my gps apps. I don’t have particular place to go. I am a homebody XD.

        Liked by 1 person

      • Haha I admit that sometimes, my comments can’t be typed ‘fast’. I end up having to type them on my laptop instead! xD Like I am doing now hahaha 🙂
I don’t worry too much about the emojis because I just use whatever keyboard equivalents I have hehe.
Ooh I see. Nah its not that I go out to socialize / hang out / have fun either. Its more of for things that are school-related or just running errands 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      • The laptop keyboard is superior than the screen XD! I just use emojis just for the heck of it haha.
I understand. Personally, school work is mostly taking over my life. I can’t wait to be done lol.

        Liked by 1 person

      • Haha definitely! xD But sometimes I don’t use too many emojis with people who don’t use them. I feel like I seem too ‘hyper’ if I do that while they just speak with normal sentences lol.

Yeah, its the same for me now :/ I currently have many deadlines so I am swamped with work at the moment too >< 'Taking over our lives' – is no understatement!

        Liked by 1 person

      • That’s understandable. If I don’t feel like using emojis, I just type out a silly face or smile. I also don’t want to sound plain or dull when talking. With this new quarter, I am hoping I don’t get overwhelmed @_@. It looks like school is hitting us hard. Lol.

        Liked by 1 person

      • I don’t want to sound overly serious when I talk sometimes, which is the main reason I put a smile even if I am talking about serious/non funny things. 🙂 Haha yeah my absences on WP and Twitter for example are mainly due to school >.> but good luck is school! Sounds like it’s getting tougher to cope for you too lol.

        Liked by 1 person

I hope everything goes well for you at school at well, and thanks! ^^

The same words to you too! (I can’t think of anything more fitting & encouraging to say to you, you put it quite perfectly! ^^)

        Liked by 1 person

      • I agree. If people started to add them in every sentence, that’s going over board XD. Thank you. I just hope this helps you feel motivated. I know that school can be stressful but I am hoping you can keep you spirit high and proud. 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      • Haha, but maybe if the sentence is very long, then it would be okay. 😀 Oh yes it does! Thankfully the stressful period is ending soon for me (like the coming Wed) so .. its the last lap for me! ^^ My spirit is re-energized when I think about it 🙂
Hope you are doing okay/well too in coping! 🙂

      • Chatting really helps for me, so thank you! 🙂 Twitter helps online connection as well because its easier to contact people through there 🙂 Though I actually still prefer WP for one-to-one way of communication. ^^ Twitter is for massive online group conversations and its fun when more people are involved 😀 So to me, its different sorts of fun. I feel more emotionally connected to people whom I talk to on WP generally 🙂 I love talking to you on both places though, so in any case its happy news for me 😀

      • After reading this, you pulled my heartstrings in a good way :). I agree with you on Twitter. It is mostly used for talking in groupchats or such. Here in WP is different. You chat to different people. It’s more personal :). Likewise, same here. Chatting with you makes blogging fun and exciting. 🙂 :).

      • Haha yep, I actually think Twitter is more like Facebook to be honest, even though the content is different. (There’s hardly any anime stuff going on in Facebook.) WP is like a public platform where we can still have semi-personal chats because readers don’t tend to check back on posts. 😀 I still love WP a lot haha. I am just lazy when it comes to writing and replying – Twitter offers the most simple solution of catching up with people here hehe :3

      • Really? I never used Facebook but I thought it would have some anime content out there. I like WordPress because like you said, it’s more personal. I feel like I can talk to you as if you are here. It’s quite friendly. I love WP as much you do :). It’s how I meet you and other bloggers. I will also Twitter to keep tabs on everyone to lol. :3

      • Oh it certainly does, but somehow I think the Facebook community on anime is more random and disorganised than anywhere else. Also, I think the quality of comments is lower and I have since lots of hate comments, similar to Youtube. I actually like WordPress because it isn’t that well known as a community or platform, and I personally like knowing at least 70% of the names in the field ^^ Hehe yeah I use Twitter to keep tabs on people as well. Its just a lot easier that way isn’t it? :p

      • Wow! I didn’t know about Facebook. So it’s almost like YouTube with the hate comments? Besides that, I don’t plan to use Facebook anytime soon. I enjoy WordPress and now Twitter. I agree with you that with WordPress, you feel comfortable with the community :). Also, it’s not too big compared to YouTube and Facebook. With WordPress, you can write about anything and speak on what’s on your mind. You are free to express yourself :). I also use Twitter to watch over everybody online XD. It’s an easy way to watch over people lol.

      • I believe I have seen more hate comments on Facebook haha. Why didn’t you get Facebook though? There are more people on that platform I believe 🙂
Haha yes, I like that WordPress isn’t a very big community. It’s like our small cozy world full of nice people :p hahah do you mean you ‘stalk’ people on Twitter? XD But no worries, I do that too. Sometimes though I forget to like or comment or reply, but I am kind of there most of the time 😁

      • Oh my that’s not good for Facebook lol. I just never got into Facebook; it didn’t really appeal to me as much as Twitter. Twitter is fast and you can interact with everyone :). I agree with WordPress. It’s a huge community and you can make your site whatever you want. The possibility is endless. You can have a whole site dedicated to your favorite anime lol.
Oh no I don’t ‘stalk’, I just check at people’s pages and read what their doing; I am not a creepy stalker XD. As long you appear in Twitter, that’s all it matters. We all care about your presence :).

  6. Well it’s been a little over a week and I finally just got back from another session of “But mom, I don’t want to write!” I was about to just throw out another review but then I thought, this would be yet another bland Akame ga Kill impression from just some dork with a blog, bettah not. So I didn’t, and thus I understand your pain. It gets tedious washing the same old dishes again and again, doesn’t it?
Speaking of posts with more thought and analysis, I too have an “In Defense” mini series for bits of SAO coming up … Wow, not sure if that’s better than Akame ga Kill or not …
Regardless, feeling plain uninspired seems to be my trend lately. I still love watching and watch/read whenever I can, I just don’t want to write about it. During times like these, do we give in and try something new to change the flow, continue our break, or write even if we don’t want to? I know that third option is out of the question, but it keeps coming back to nag me. Perhaps I’m falling out of place with blogging, *sighs* idk I’m not gonna stop until that God forsaken SAO post gets out (that was just too much work, girl), but after that, who knows.
Then every time I say that, I get a rush to put something out there once again. Why, I’m a bouncing ball of hypocrisy, aren’t I? Hahaha!
Sorry for gunking up your comment section. If you do decide to pursue one of those prompts you listed, I’d love to give them a read (and maybe you’ve already done that, I’m that behind >.<). Anymore Charlotte I can get I'll lap up like a dumb dog, just an FYI. 🙂

    • Hahaha yeahhh exactly! Its a little strange, once you’re on a roll you could restrain that line of thought. But the lesser you post, it becomes some sort of inertia that holds you back from writing – or at least, that’s what happens with me anyway. 🙂

But in any case, I still think ‘In Defense’ blog posts are pretty cool. So go ahead Takuto you have my full support on that!! 😀

Yeah, I agree that sometimes we just want to watch things without worrying about having to write about it. I would think its better not to force yourself to write about it when you don’t feel like it, otherwise writing would more likely be associated with a negative experience. (Though, I am actually guilty of forcing myself for a few posts on here, haha. But I try not to do that anyway :D) Perhaps its good to switch to something non-anime related or easier to write, like a personal blog post or something xD

Its okay, I believe I just contradicted myself in what I wrote above so you’ll have a bouncing-hypocrisy-ball-friend right here!! xP

Its okay, I actually like it when people unleash torrents of words in comments :p Nah, unfortunately I haven’t been able to get to them, and neither do I know when I would too xD I shall decide to stop worrying and only do it when I feel like it. You could do the same as well 🙂

  7. I wonder who that WP lurker you’re referring to is….

You should watch The Tatami Galaxy; short anime and it’s amazing. I believe it’ll inspire you haha. Or maybe it won’t. But that show is a must watch.

    • Haha I wonder too xD Maybe he’s – finally – not a lurker anymore! We’ll see :p

It seems interesting and the art really looks ..different. I am watching Seirei now though so maybe after that. 🙂 Either way, I probably need to move into the ‘indie’ realm of anime soon haha.
